Our 501(c)(7) Status - as of August, 2009 |
| |
|
The
Region is
pleased to announce
that the RRR CLC has been incorporated in New Jersey with 501(c)(7) status.
This status is normally granted to social and hobby clubs and differs from
the more commonly seen 501(c)(3) in several ways. The main differences
are with treatment of donations made to 501(c)(3) organizations which are
deductible by the donor. Additionally, in NJ, 501(c)(3) organizations
would not have to pay NJ sales tax on purchases. With our 501(c)(7)
status, we can accept donations, but the donor is not eligible for any tax
benefit and we will pay NJ sales tax on our purchases.
There are no fees or taxes
due to either NJ or the IRS. However, the club should submit Form 990
annually
-
The IRS only requires filing if club revenues meet or exceed $25,000
annually. As a matter of course the club will file the Form 990 return
annually, even if we do not meet or exceed the income limits.
Our new status will not alter our present operation; nor does it have much
impact on our day to day operations. It does establish the club as a
separate entity, divorced from the individual members, thereby allowing it
to continue beyond the current specific membership. The new separate
entity – The Club – can thus continue to fulfill its goals and objectives
even as the membership changes over time. Along with the by-laws, it also
establishes the actions that would be taken upon dissolution of the club
and disbursement of any remaining funds in accordance with government
rules. The one time cost of incorporation totaled $895 in fees to the IRS
and the cost of incorporation paper work.
Our special thanks to Greg Della Pia CPA, one of our members, who
graciously provided his services in preparing and securing our new status
free of charge. |
