Those walking through Somerville during the
evening of August 14th were not only treated to a bevy of Cadillacs and
LaSalles but also to the friendly faces of the Raritan River Region. With
our club tent and banner in place on the lawn of the old court house and
our majestic Cadillacs and LaSalle motorcars stylishly arranged at the
curb, the Somerville Cruise night, by order of the Mayor, officially
recognized not only our cars but our club as well.
For those not familiar with the Somerville
Cruise, it is held every Friday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor
Day weekend and attracts hundreds of cars. Each Friday the town
recognizes one club and allocates all of the parking spaces in front of
the historic court house for their exclusive use.
This event, originally scheduled for June
5th, was rained out, but with the hard work, supervision and guidance of
Bernie Cooney, we were able to secure a second date and what an evening it
turned out to be! Unlike our prior date, the weather was fully
cooperative...actually it was superb! Warm temperatures and bright
sunshine followed at sunset by a beautiful balmy evening.
Somerville was a “happening” place that
Friday night with large crowds and a rather large Chicken drawn to
the cars and especially to our assemblage of Cadillac and LaSalle
motorcars. Thanks to the ever resourceful Pat Caruso, each of the cars
displayed title cards listing the year, make and model and many cars also
displayed original or facsimile window stickers and other historical
documentation. One spectator, after studying one of the cars, remarked,
“this is just like going on a museum tour”. What greater compliment could
we have received, the sincere appreciation of a spectator who enjoyed
viewing the cars and for a short time shared our enthusiasm for this
hobby. Who knows, possibly a future collector or two was recruited into
old car hobby that evening.
