Every
generation has a favorite era. For Custom and Hot Rod Lovers, it was the
Fab 50's.
On Labor
Day weekend, for the past 27 years, car owners, driving their Customs, Hot
Rods and stock, restored vintage machines, converge on the campus of the
Hilton Hotel and surrounding areas.
Some
families start arriving on Monday to make this the last vacation of the
Summer, before the kids go back to school. As the week progresses,
more people start to arrive.
Now, while
some of the cars are trailered, the majority are driven and driven hard to
get to this "Time Warp".
I
personally think that the sales of hair wax, hair spray and other hair
products, skyrocket this time of year. But for some of us, it's an
everyday lifestyle. There is more grease on top of heads, than under
some cars.
Among the
food vendors, there are "Islands". This is where car clubs, set up
shop for the week or weekend. They have the picnic tables, chairs,
and the ever important cooler(s). I'm going to let all of you figure the
beverage of choice.........
Enter
the hotel. Friday night, in the lounge, is the "Sock Hop".
This is DJ'd by good friend, Paul, from Rhode Island. Wander through
the lobby into the rear atrium, there are some indoor vendors.
Among, which, you can have your very own Wurlitzer or Rock-Ola jukebox,
these are fully restored, and can accept cd's.
On
Saturday, there is a traffic jam out to Route 10. The reason for this, a
lot of people go just for the day. It does get pretty packed on Saturday.
If you want to listen to some music, while taking a break from all the
walking, you can listen to a local Rockabilly band. The Razorbacks, which,
by the way, hail from Bound Brook, will be playing for a few hours. If you
really feel up to it, and want to hang out for the evening festivities,
The Golden Gup and his band will be spinning wax in the rear of the hotel.
Now comes
the worst day of the weekend - Sunday. This is the last day.
The event includes a Parade of "Prom Queens". Then, it is off to either a
"Senior Prom" or a concert by the incomparable, Bobby Rydell.
There are
also awards given out. These cars are not judged, but merely picked
by a committee. They include Top Customs, Hot Rods, Stock, and a few
other picks.
I had said
the last day is Sunday, right? Well, on Monday, you do have a
certain few ,who refuse to leave. But by 12 Noon, it's over and a safe
ride back to 2009.
Keep
Kruizin!
