Thanks to Bernie
Cooney for arranging this great season-opener - and writing this story -
and taking the pictures! |

The members of the Raritan River
Region, aside from other warm and ingenious qualities, know how to have a
good time. For instance serve up a couple of eggs, add toast and jelly.
Breakfast? Yes, sort of. Add the fine folks from the RRR and you have a
real festive occasion. Add some omelets, french toast, pancakes and some
cinnamon coffee cake and you have a meal fit for the royalty eating it.
And don't forget the oatmeal.
This has been
a rather cold winter. When it gets to be March, we start to look for a
little added warmth enhancing our winter sun. Following the vernal
equinox it is a crap shoot as to whether or not we get warmth from the
weather. Sunday March 22 (yes, officially Spring) dawned below freezing
in most areas of Jersey. A chilly trip to the HomeTown Buffet in Edison
was rewarded with the unseasonable warmth of 28 Raritan River Region
members and one guest. In two short hours everyone did a good job
sampling the bodacious buffet offered. Omelet station, carving station, a
selection of eggs of many styles, meats of many varieties. Add to that a
selection of breakfast staples and breakfast treats. Not every one forgot
the oatmeal and no one left hungry. Sounds nice? Read on....

Oldest car was
Hugh and Kathy's 1930 Ford Deluxe Roadster. Their 1931 Cadillac
needs little for the 2009 season, but - alas - wasn't ready in time for our
dust-off. Come to think of it, this isn't considered shabby
transpiration, is it? Tom DeGaglia brought his 1965 DeVille
convertible. An outstanding car. |

|
After everyone
had their fill, it was time for a stroll to the parking lot. Some
came modern, but not all. Quite surprising, one of the stars of the
parking lot show was a Ford.
Hugh and Kathy Dyer
have a 1931 Cadillac V12 Phaeton which is in the final stages of
restoration. Their 1930 Model "A" Deluxe roadster (without side curtains)
did an admirable job of transporting them to Edison, then entertained all
spectators outside while the Dyers entertained our Region members inside.

Julie Levine and Steve Rose know how to travel. Their 1978 Fleetwood always delivers them in safety and comfort. |

Lou and Mike Filardo know how to travel in Style, that's spelled with a capital "S". Their 1977 couple was a beacon for grace in the parking lot. |

Steve and Julie are very active is many clubs. They enjoy traveling, and when we have any distance to go, their names are first on the list. Nancy (and her hubby Jack) live in Haddonfield. True to form, these active members are not afraid to make room on their busy schedules for a good time with the RRR. |

Apologies go to those whose cars are not listed, and the following
attendees, as an amateur cameraman trying to learn the secrets of digital
photography proved not up to the task of photographing all there was to
see. The camera's eye may have been quite intrusive but, unfortunately,
it didn't capture the smiling faces of
Bob Rankin,
or
Lou Filardo
and his son
Mike.
Also omitted was photographic evidence of two people who affect every
member of our region.
Tony D'Agostino
is a member of our board, and his wife,
Lynn
compiles our monthly Caddy Corner for publication. Two important people,
two important jobs. Please accept photographic ineptness as an
excuse, as no slight was intended. A special thank you goes to guest,
Bob Allen. The
Somerset County Library has been very good to us over the years. Bob
Allen, outreach director continues to coordinate 4 nursing home visits
each fall, presenting entertainment for the residents of 4 upscale elder
care establishments, while providing the Raritan River Region, CLC and the
New Jersey Region, AACA some very nice events. Check the Caddy Corner,
and website
calendar, for these fun September events.
Although there was no specific long
distance award, a little research (thanks to Google Maps) holds a
surprising tid-bit of information:
 |
Tony and Lynn D'Agostino had a
1 hour, 10 minute ride,
traveling 60.7
miles traversing the distance from
their estate in Oakland to our modest eatery in Edison. |
 |
Jack and Nancy Hotz, who symbolize all
that is right and proper from the Valley Forge Region travelled a scant
59.5 miles, in 1
hour, 4 minutes (any
speeding tickets, Jack?) from their colonial mansion in Haddonfield to
enjoy breakfast with us mere mortals. |
 |
Jeff and Mary Hookway, who have been
members of the RRR since time immemorial left their wooded chalet in
Sparta to join us for the festivities. According to Google (our
yard-stick) they traveled 50.6
miles. Considerably less
distance than their long-distance rivals. However,
again using Google as an authority and ignoring the opinions of the
State Police, they were on the road for 1
hour, 11 minutes. |
Since no information on traffic citations
has come forth, all three couples receive a hearty handshake and a sincere
thank you for going the distance to be with their fellow region members!
Thanks goes
to
Bob Crimmins, Tony & Lynn D'Agostino, the Caruso clan: Pat, Mary and
Aunt Dora, Bob Allen, Tom DeGaglia, Hugh and Kathy Dyer, Lou and Mike
Filardo, Jeff & Mary Hookway, Jack & Nancy Hotz, Ray Koziol, Julie Levine
& Steve Rose, Bob & Ann Losco, Joe Manna, Rich & Marion Nalavany, Joe
Puleo, Bob Rankin, Jay Raskin, Bernie Cooney.
A special thanks also goes to the staff and management of the HomeTown Buffet for being such
wonderful hosts.
Do you think
anyone will be hungry next year? |
