(Last updated Monday, 13 August 07)

On June 11, 2006 the combined forces of the Raritan River Region, CLC, Valley Forge Region, CLC and New Jersey Region, AACA teamed up for a whooping good time.  66 Tourists in 32 cars enjoyed the rapidly vanishing rural countryside of Hunterton County NJ and Buck’s County PA.  Colonial history was explored while this incredible assemblage of tourists traveled two lane roads and traversed 7 covered bridges.  Although at least one of these Covered Bridges have claims to being haunted, at last report all tourists had made it home safe and sound.

Special thanks go to Bob Rankin for his aid in the discovery of this scenic venture.

Top ten reasons why the Covered Bridge Tour was a success:

10) Getting to ride in the back seat of a 1931 Cadillac Model 355.

9) Crossing the Delaware River twice on bridges that aren’t wide enough for 1960’s era Cadillacs.  (Kids, don’t try this with bias-ply tires.)

8) Crossing the Delaware River where General George Washington Transported 2000 troops by long boat on Christmas Eve 1776.

7) Driving over bridges that were built 60 years after Washington Crossed the Delaware on Christmas Eve 1776

6) Seeing the look on people’s faces when a 1939 LaSalle or 1947 Cadillac Convertible drives past them.

5) Seeing a book that listed every covered bridge in the United States (thanks, Betty!)

4) Top down, 75 degree temperatures and lots of sunshine!  (Pass the sun-tan lotion, please.)

3) Drainage ditches and streams shielded from passing motorists only by 3 inch tall ferns.

2) Eithel Town and David Sutton would have been pleased.

1) Traveling with Frank and Nancy Bramante, Rich Hartkorn, Jack and Nancy Hotz, Mike Lizzio and Lynn Hunt-fones, Bob and Ann Losco, Roger and Marilyn Love, Aaron and Helen Newman, Selma and Richard Reichert, Rosemary Spicuzza, Walter and MaryAnn Wary, Jim Fields, Tim Ly, Darren Muso, Chris Pozarycki, Ron Spata and Betty Lewis, Bob Rankin, Andrew Monahan, and Bernie Cooney.

The Covered Bridge Tour sure sounded like a lot of fun!!  But where are the P-H-O-T-O-S?  How could we possibly venture thru some of the most picturesque scenery in NJ and PA, and NOT post photos?

Well, first of all, thanks to contributing photographers RICH HARTKORN, ROSEMARY SPICUZZA, DARREN MUSO and CHRIS POZARYCKI.

And thanks to BERNIE COONEY for setting up our first-ever on-line photo album.  Click on the camera, and let the tour begin - or you can see the pics and captions, below!

Jack and Nancy Hotz rode in the lap of luxury in their 1939 LaSalle.

Mike Lizzio's 1960 Convertible was re-awakened for this tour. It had been quite some time since this car had taken a road trip, and (according to Mike) it did quite well.

Rich Hartkorn's 1992 Allante. Rich knows how to ride in style!

Ron Spata's '57. He's had this car for 20 years. This car handled like a veteran on this tour. So did Ron!

Roger and Marilyn Love brought their 1931 Town Sedan. This car provided visual impact for spectators and other tourists.

Bernie Cooney and his '61 both enjoyed the ride.

Are we in Kansas yet? There isn't much of New Jersey that still looks like this. Pictured is rural Hunterdon County.

AACA members Larry & Marie Littman traveled in style in their '79 Fleetwood.

Bob Rankin is a member of both the VFR and RRR. He was my pilot during much of the preparation of this tour. Seen here, he is preparing his '63 (Maybeline) for the trip.

This is the Van Sant Bridge. Out of all the bridges crossed, this one gives the most positive indication of being haunted.

What waterway does the Cabin Run Bridge cross? If you guessed Cabin Run, you win the kewpie doll! There were originally 26 covered bridges built in Buck's County. By 1958 that number had dwindled to 13. When you consider that most of these structures date back to the first half of the 19th century, that is still a remarkable survival rate. Our tour included 6 of the 10 bridges that still handle vehicular traffic.

Bob Rankin's '63 takes a fair share of the roadway using the Loux Bridge. This bridge is a bit plainer than some of the others. It features Town Truss (sometimes called lattice truss) construction.

Two lane roads were the order of the day. All reports are that Cadillacs perform quite well when used at relaxed speeds and non-competative conditions.

Bowman's Hill Tower is an imposing edifice that affords a commanding view of the Delaware River area. A recent renovation installed an elevated in this structure, so that a mere 23 steps separate the tourists from the pinnacle.

The view from the top of Bowman's Hill Tower.

Above is the Delaware view, to the left is the Buck's County view. Much has been developed in this area in recent years. That led to the decision to tour this area now, while there is still unspoiled scenery to be enjoyed.

An old car, a picnic table and a shade tree. A perfect combination for a beautiful spring day.

Jack Hotz, Mike Lizzio and Rich Hartkorn solving the problems of the world.

Scenes from Van Sant Airport. Glider planes, and vintage aircraft combine to make this a most picturesque respite from the rigors of the road.

Our final stop, The Canyon Creek Grill in Frenchtown New Jersey. This local cruise night was the perfect setting for the culimnation of a day of old cars and old friends.

With a great eye for composition, our mystery photographers, Chris and Darren, give us a glimpse of the picturesque countryside that still exists relatively close to cosmopolitan New Jersey.

In a rare public appearance, mystery photographers Darren (left) and Chris (right) pose with their... Wait guys! Can't you afford a Cadillac?
